The Farm – Newcastle City Hall 2024

Saturday April 13th 2024

Our first concert of the year takes us to Newcastle City Hall, a concert hall located in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It has hosted many popular music and classical artists throughout the years, as well as standup and comedy acts.

Doors were opening at 4pm so we met up at mid-day at Sort Rehearsal Rooms, Liverpool…

Carl & Karl wondering where the 5 year old crate of Red Stripe will fit.

Silver bus today…

Finally we set off and we were glad to see the weather improving after a stormy few days…

Last time we used the Silver bus we watched this film, must’ve left it here…

It was still great😀

After the film we stopped off in the village of Wetherby…

Wetherby is a picturesque town on the River Wharfe, with a market charter dating back to 1240 when Henry III granted the Knights Templar a charter for a weekly market. The market is still held today, every Thursday, centred on the Town Hall.

On the way to find food, we spotted this plaque…

The Huguenots were a French Protestant denomination with origins in the 16th or 17th centuries. As they gained influence and more openly displayed their faith, Catholic hostility grew and forced the Huguenots to convert. While nearly three-quarters eventually were killed or submitted, roughly 500,000 Huguenots had fled France by the early 18th century.
A large number of Huguenot émigrés relocated to Protestant European nations such as England. They were skilled weavers and would have easily found work in Yorkshire.

Our pub of choice was the Mews…

Tucked away down Bank Street, Mews serves a good selection of regional and local ales and has a reputation for good quality food. Along with the six handpumps on the bar is a good range of keg and bottled beers plus an extensive selection of gins. Wood-floored with a variety of seating, to the side of the pub is a paved outdoor drinking area with plenty of tables and chairs.

Carl’s beer of choice was the Hawkshead Brewery’s Windermere Pale…

A very pale ale bursting with hop flavour from the signature hop – Citra. Brewed with soft Lakeland water, Maris Otter malted barley and whole cone hops. Award winning since 2012!

The rest of us went for the Brew York Brewery’s ‘Calmer Chameleon’…

The green dream of super juicy and resinous hops Columbus, Mosaic, Simcoe and Idaho 7 uniting in a super smashable pale ale.

Food menu was good…

Carl had the burger I had the Steak Pie…

We had another round of drinks then headed outside…

…before heading back to the van refreshed.

We were still an hour away so we had time to put a few bets on as it was Grand National Day…

Exciting finish!

At last we arrived in Newcastle…

Today’s running order…

Today’s rider…

“Flat and tasteless, no better than carling or fosters. Go for 1664 if you want something more akin to the old Stella taste.” Anon.

Today’s guests…

Peter’s cousins from Cumbria

Time to go on stage…

Great crowd!

After the show, guests Gillian Thomas and friends came backstage. Roy had heard her telling her ‘first gig story’ on the Sara Cox show on Radio 2 but she said she couldn’t remember it as she was sick so he emailed her and offered her a guest list…

Hear what she had to say about the gig when she went back on the Sara Cox show recently at 1:39:20

We watched some of the Wedding Present then went downstairs to the bar to meet up with a couple of fans…

🎵The pint that thinks it’s a quart🎵

However temping it was to upgrade….

…sadly it was time to head home – although we had no rider and we hadn’t had chance to eat anything.

Problem solved…

Kirkby Stephen’s finest ‘Santorino’s …

The combo kebabs were delicious😋

And over the road…

The Pennine Hotel re-opened their bar for the thirsty Farmers…

Inspired by the famous Lakeland fell-walker Alfred Wainwright, our master brewers go the extra mile too. They search near and far for quality English malt and hops and tirelessly craft unique combinations worthy of the Wainwright name, like this delightfully refreshing Golden Beer. Lightly hopped with subtle sweetness, a delicate citrus aroma and a gloriously golden colour.

What a fantastic opening gig for 2024 and yet another great day out!
